Washington Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth
The new Washington Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing features two new buildings totaling 50,000 sf, including a physical education and academic building. The new building will consolidate the K-12 grades into one building, with specifically designed learning environments that prioritize ASL-English instruction. The school is remaining fully operational during construction, using two other campus buildings for classes, that will later be demolished once the new academic and physical education buildings are complete and ready for occupation.
In preparation for interviewing for this project, Glumac’s team of engineers spent several months learning American Sign Language in order to show our commitment to the project and prepare for engaging with project stakeholders throughout the course of services.
Care and thought have gone into the design of systems and structures at all levels that will facilitate visual communication and interaction for the deaf and hard of hearing community. Things such as wider hallways and sidewalks to allow students to look at one another while walking and communicating, glass corners to see oncoming pedestrians, and U-shaped seating allow for easier interaction.
