University of Washington, Denny Hall
Seattle, Washington, United States
Built in 1895, this brick-and-sandstone, French-Renaissance-style building is the oldest at the University of Washington – Seattle. It sits in the heart of campus, housing classrooms, offices and language labs. However, as is the case with many beautifully historic buildings, it called for upgrades in the 2000s.
Glumac provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design, along with energy modeling, for a series of upgrades. The project team renovated the building with insulation in the exterior walls and roof and installed high-performance lighting. They upgraded the HVAC systems with efficient Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems in the spaces that required cooling, electric baseboards where cooling was not required, and also took advantage of natural ventilation.
