Seattle Asian Art Museum
Seattle, Washington, United States
The historic, Art Deco-style Seattle Asian Art Museum received upgrades to the facility’s systems and structure in 2018.
Glumac provided energy modeling and LEED enhanced commissioning for the 14,000-square-feet of changes. It included upgrades to the facility’s original HVAC and the humidity control – a crucial element in an art museum. The building upgrades also included additions of a glass lobby, elevator, gallery, community meeting room, and an education studio for hands-on art.
Glumac commissioned a complex system that comprises a boiler plant, heat recovery chiller, and water-to-water heat pump. This system provides both energy efficiency and cost savings by recovering otherwise wasted heat and using it elsewhere in the building.
The commissioning team supported the project schedule by providing design and sequence of operations reviews long before construction was underway. Catching and resolving holes in documentation proved Glumac’s adage: “It’s a lot cheaper to work things out while they’re still on paper.”
Glumac’s Energy Team initially provided utility bill analysis based on submetered data to estimate forecasted utility bills after the facility’s upgrades. Glumac was further contracted to perform whole-building LEED energy modeling and refined the level of accuracy of the post-renovation utility bill forecasting.
