Courthouse Pushes the Boundaries of Tradition: Wayne L. Morse U.S. Federal Courthouse

David Summers, P.E., LEED®AP, Los Angeles Associate Principal

The Wayne L. Morse U.S. Federal Courthouse has recently received the 2008 Platinum Award from Building Design + Construction magazine. This $79 million project was completed in August 2006 and was the first federal courthouse to receive LEED® Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Glumac collaborated with DLR Group (Architect of Record), Morphosis (Design Architect), JE Dunn Construction (GC) and Brightworks (LEED® Consultant), among others, to help the GSA realize their vision for this project.

"Basically, it's 50% design/construction excellence and 50% Building Team collaboration." Dave Barista, Managing Editor, Building Design & Construction.

This 262,000 sf courthouse has underfloor air distribution throughout the building and a hydronic radiant floor system for heating and cooling in the main lobby and perimeter circulation areas. Notable engineering features also include a heat recovery chiller plant and nighttime economizer cooling using the underfloor air system to precool the building mass.
